Serval are found in grassland, savanna, and wetland habitats in sub-Saharan Africa. They are most common in areas with high rodent populations, which are a primary prey species for servals.
Serval are medium-sized wild cats, with males typically weighing between 8-18 kg (18-40 lbs) and females weighing between 6-12 kg (13-26 lbs). They stand about 50-60 cm (20-24 inches) at the shoulder and have a body length of about 65-100 cm (26-39 inches).
Serval have a distinctive fur coat that is yellow to tawny in color, with black spots and stripes. They also have long legs and a small head with large ears, which are used for detecting prey.
For hunting serval, hunters typically use a high-powered rifle with a scope, as well as camouflage clothing and boots. A hunting knife and field dressing kit are also recommended for field dressing the animal.
To track and locate serval, hunters should look for signs of the animal, such as tracks, scat, and scent marking. Serval are most active at dawn and dusk, so hunting during these times can be more effective.
The recommended shot placement for serval is a high shoulder shot, as this will quickly incapacitate the animal. Hunters should aim for the center of the chest, just behind the shoulder.
